Few People See Oscar’s Best Picture Finalists

Few people have gone to see Oscar’s nine Best Picture nominees this year. The box office grosses
for the nominees are the lowest they’ve been in six years, since 2011, Variety recently reported.
Only two of the movies, DUNKIRK and GET OUT, have topped $100 at the box office in the U.S.
and Canada.

“The Oscars are regarding more and more niche films,” Jeff Bock, a box office analyst for
Exhibitor Relations, said. “There’s not a lot to talk about in terms of social media buzz or pop culture
significance.”

In contrast to Oscar, MOVIEGUIDE®’s Ten Best Movies for families had five movies that made
more than $100 million at the box office. Its Ten Best Movies for Mature Audiences had six.
A one-hour salute to MOVIEGUIDE®’s Award winners, including exclusive interviews with top
stars and directors, will air on the REELZChannel Easter Sunday, April 1, at 4 pm Eastern Time and 1
pm Pacific Time. The program will be repeated at 12 Midnite Eastern and 9 pm Pacific April 2 on
REELZ.
